SNAME Graduate Scholarship

SNAME's Graduate Scholarships Program bestows multiple scholarships in honor SNAME Members. Applicants use a single application to apply for all scholarships within the program. 
 

Since its inception in 1933, the SNAME Graduate Scholarship Program has awarded millions of dollars of scholarship awards to students in the naval architecture, marine engineering, ocean engineering and marine industry related fields.  Applicants must not receive their Master's Degree prior to October 1 of the year in which they are applying for their scholarship. Generally, applicants are not expected to receive their Master's Degree prior to April 15 of the academic year in which graduate study is undertaken.

How to Apply

1.Open to applicants worldwide that wish to pursue advanced studies in approved universities.

2. SNAME membership is required to be in place at least four months prior to the application submission
deadline (i.e. by October 1).

3. Awards are made for one year of study leading to a master’s degree in naval architecture, marine
engineering, ocean engineering, ship hydrodynamics and wave theory, ship and offshore structures, or in
other fields directly related to the marine industry.

4. Scholarships can only be awarded to students who will receive their master’s degree after September 1 of
the calendar year in which they are applying for their scholarship.

5. The John V. Wehausen scholarship can only be awarded to students who will be pursuing advanced
studies in ship hydrodynamics and wave theory and will receive their master’s degree after April 15 of the
academic year they are applying for their scholarship.

6. The Walter M. and Doris H. Maclean scholarship can only be awarded to applicants who will be pursuing
advanced studies in ship and offshore structures.

7. Master holders can only be eligible for the Walter M. and Doris H. Maclean scholarship.

8. Graduate scholarships are awarded to an individual only once.

9. Application forms may be downloaded from SNAME's Scholarships webpage and are to be submitted
electronically at: [email protected].

10. Although applicants are not required to provide GRE scores, they will be at a disadvantage if they do not
do so, regardless of graduate school admission requirements. GRE scores count as much as 15% of the
application ranking for award consideration.

11. Applications must be received prior to February 1, with all supporting data by February 15 for
Scholarships Committee review.

12. Selection is in April based upon Scholarships Committee recommendations and Executive Committee
approval.

13. Scholarship funds may be used for student tuition, textbooks, academic fees, or other academic related
expenses for study and research.
